A Bright New Shop For Rayleigh High Street

Something cheery to write about this evening : A new sweet shop opens in Rayleigh High Street this Saturday! The Mr Simms shops are a franchise operation that seems to have a succesful feel-good formula. According to their main website:

Mr Simm’s Olde Sweet Shoppe was formed in July 2004. The initial idea was inspired by an etching of an old fashioned sweet shop discovered in a copy of 1958 confectionery magazine. Extensive market research realised that confectionery specialists had dwindled over the decades, consistent with the demise of most small independent retailers. Today there is sameness in most towns and cities that leaves a door wide open for a new, creative and unique type of retail outlet.

It will be interesting to see how creative they are….. and if anyone wants to write a review of their sweets (with a photo or two) please let us know.

Incidentally the Rayleigh shop set up their own Facebook page this week.

  • Don’t forget too our own Sweet Memories just across the road in Eastwood Road. It would be a shame if they were to be forced out of business.
Incidentally, Sweet Memories are cheaper than Mr Simms too. I also understand that Toys and Tuck are suffering as well!!

  • I must admit I have been in both Sweet Memories and Mr Simms. I will not be returning to Mr Simms when I can go to Sweet Memories and purchase the same sweets for a fraction of the price. I do also find that the Sweet Memories staff are much friendlier and I never feel rushed. They are always willing to go that extra mile which is nice. I am a firm believer in supporting your local businesses. Their are too many big chains trying to rip us general public off and kill off the genuine local business.

I have to visit Rayleigh now and again for work during busy periods, and I was told about both of these sweet shops when wanting to purchase some gluten free chocolate for a family friend. I ….. went to Mr Simms. As it happens their stock is leaps and bounds nicer presented ….

  • Mr Simms every time for me. It’s brilliant that I don’t have to travel into Southend to purchase sweets now. The new shop is well stocked, clean and tidy. The staff are extremely friendly and have gone out of their way to make us feel welcome in there.
