… and so we have PCC elections forced on us by Nick Clegg, who also insisted on a November election date, and the Lib Dems cannot be bothered to stand a candidate in Essex.
For the first time I can remember I am not voting in this election. Why? Well, firstly I think it is the most useless position and election ever foisted on us, and secondly, complete lack of information. Not one leaflet, manifesto, any scrap of information has floated through my letter box. No-one has canvassed me in the High St. Yes, I can look on line, but what about people without a computer, (and there are still a lot of those) what are they supposed to do – guess! If someone wants my vote I expect them to do a least a modicum of work for it. If the candidates are going to treat the public with such disdain then they musn’t be surprised if the public do the same to them.
To be fair to the candidates, especially the independents and the smaller parties it’s a big ask to distribute a leaflet across the whole of Essex.!
At a general election the post office will deliver a leaflet for each candidate (who pays for the printing , but not the delivery) . That hasn’t applied to these elections.
I take your point on that, but with no information being delivered then how are people without access to computers supposed to know what people stand for? I even know of some elderly people with computers who didn’t know they could find details of the candidates on line. I’ve seen this exact same comment made time and time again in news broadcasts in the last few days from all over the Country. On 11 September the Electoral Commission said a booklet would be sent to every household making people aware of what the election was about, why it was happening etc. Well I never had one, and neither did anyone else I have asked. I have also read that they have had a lot of complaints about lack of information on candidates from all over the Country. I think the turn out will be exceptionally low and the whole thing will have been a massive waste of money. Not that Governments wasting money is anything new.
The polling cards gave details of where to find information about the candidates online and a freephone number which could be used to request information through the post.
The Conservatives delivered a substantial number of leaflets etc and our candidate was out in Rayleigh High Street.
If candidates want to secure votes, it is they that should be working hard to get their name known. It is not up to the voters to go out of their way and find out information. The only information we received through our door was the Conservative leaflet, which was delivered at 6pm on the day of the election! Better late than never I guess!
I agree with Christine – we too have not received the official leaflet, supposedly distributed to every household in the country, plus being a lady of a “certain age” I too did not know that I could get information about the candidates online. We did, however, receive two cards about Nick Alston through our door last night, one at approximately 7p.m. the other at about 8.30p.m. Too late I’m afraid.
Nice to see that the Government who wants to impose a minimum turnout figure for a strike ballot to be valid feels that an 18% (ish) turnout in a national election still gives a mandate. Reek of hypocrisy there I think.
Mr Brown, I congratulate Mr Alston on his success . Do know if he will be addressing the demise of Neighbourhood Policing in Rochford District? 1:30,000 ratio – far less than our neighbours. Why isn’t Rochford being policed?
The Chief Constable has announced that he is to stand down, which is not surprising given the U-turns and failures of his policies. Neighbourhood Policing has virtually disappeared in Rochford. Will any of our politicans start commenting on what’s going on?
Thank you, Hylton. The whole of Rochford District seems to have been singled out for ‘special attention’ with policing levels far below the rest of Essex. None of our politicans seem to want to address this issue, so there is plenty for Nick to do.

I think these elections are completely unnecessary. But I WILL be voting – for Mick Thwaites as first choice.
Linda Belgrove is also a good choice.
Agree – it is completely outrageous that a supposedly inependent role is being fought on party political grounds.

I recommend everyone to vote for Val Morris-Cook.
The last thing Essex needs is another Labour person in any position of power.

You are dead right about the turn-out Christine !
Official turnout 13 percent!
Tory Nick Alston has scraped home to victory,3686 votes ahead of Mick Thwaites. CLOSE!

Angelina/Brian
He will be holding public meetings but as yet I don’t know where and when. However, I am sure there wil be some held in this part of the county.
Neighbourhood Policing is one of many things to which he will be turning his attention.
