The Rain Figures
The figures relate to the south Essex area (rounded to the nearest whole mm) and were recorded on Saturday 24th August from Met Office and Environment Agency gauges:
Although these totals are for the whole day, there were some intense spells of rainfall. Shoeburyness Landwick recorded 47mm of rain in a four hour period between 13:00 and 17:00. The long term average rainfall for the month of August at Shoeburyness Landwick is 45mm. Meanwhile, during the most intense outbreaks of rain, Southend received over 20mm in an hour and Maldon received 10mm of rain in 15 minutes. Southend has a long term average monthly rainfall total of 45mm for August, while in Maldon it is very similar with 49mm.
As far as the highest rainfall totals for August are concerned, in 1946 Southend recorded 117mm of rain during the month. Meanwhile, Shoeburyness Landwick received 108mm of rain in August 1999.
