  • Seems rather daft to me that only 8 year old and above can do this after all I took my four year old up the windmill and have you seen them staircases? Surely if he can manage that then he can manage this, it’s not like us parents leave them to their own devices or put them in unsuitable danger. I would be interested to know why there is an age limit. Any ideas?

  • Elmore,
It’s all about EU Elf & Safety, once Captain Farage is in charge then normal service will be resumed……just you wait, at last a party saying what we are all saying in our own homes….

  • I haven’t been up the church tower for a couple of years, but I would say that although the windmill steps are steep, the church tower is quite a bit higher than the mill and not so well lit. And its quite narrow – there isn’t enough room for people to go up and down at the same time. Also when you get to the top you are out in the open (which can be a bit scary) Though a seven year old wouldn’t be able to see anything over the parapet unless an adult put the child on their shoulder.

And anyway its nothing to with the EU!

  • Chris,
I beg to differ, EU directive 1347.678.897 issue 6 states that no seven year old can exceed the height of a 300 year old church parapet….

  • Well that is OK then as the Church is much older than 300 years – so exempt as defined in the Nanny State doctrine article 1001 sub- section 9 that now rules the world.

  • Why does every Health and Safety issue have to be viewed in a negative way? Some rules are there for good reason and in this case to protect young children. It is most likely that the windmill has a different insurer with different stipulations. Besides which, it was very windy at the top of the tower on Monday.

  • Alison,
Most Elf & Safety enforcements having little to do with protecting the individual and a lot more about protecting themselves from the No Win No Fee brigade. I think I right in saying started by a change in the law by the last Loony Lefty Labour party

  • I know a very respectable 50-something businessman who nearly got charged by the police for carrying a knife as part of his motorcycle toolkit. I’m not convinced he should automatically go to prison for 6 months for doing that twice….

  • I walked through Leigh-on-Sea old town with a craft knife in my pocket on Friday, the purpose being to carry out a survey for rot in an old wooden boat owned by the Sea Scouts. The only form of authority I observed was a parking attendant!

  • Come on guys – you know as well as I do this is about trying to stop yobs from carrying knives and killing people, not about decent law abiding people making the odd mistake. Go to the back of the class….

  • Oz, yes I am still taking the same standpoint.
I take knife crime very seriously. I particularly remember the Lib Dem councillor Andrew Pennington who was posthumously awarded the George Medal after defending an MP at a surgery from a sword attack.
But clearly 6 month sentences aren’t long enough for real thugs, but too long for absent-minded chaps who keep knives in the car when they shouldn’t do, or perhaps girls pressurised by their boyfriends into carrying knives for them.

I’ll be posting something separate about those knife crime figures….
