New Review Committee Kicks Off – Air Quality And Highways Rangers

The Review Committee, which scrutinises council activities, had its first meeting of the civic year tonight. It has a new chair, Michael Hoy, who did a decent job tonight (the first time he has ever chaired a district council committee).

Two of the items discussed were:

Air quality in Rayleigh Street and High Road.

Levels of air pollution from traffic in the High Street and High Road are probably high enough for the District Council to declare the location as an “Air Quality Management Area”. This isn’t a magic wand to solve the problem. However the local highways panel may be looking soon at adjusting the pedestrian crossings in the town centre to improve traffic flow and reduce all the stopping and starting, which would reduce traffic emissions. Declaring the area might help persuade the County Council to fund and carry out the scheme.

Highways Rangers

The County Council has teams of highways rangers to carry out minor works, such as clearing vegetation. However many councillors feel the system doesn’t work properly. Discussions are taking place about the District Council taking over the management of the Rangers. Nothing is decided yet…..

About the author, admin

  • Let’s hope that any person concerned about air quality / pollution does not drive a car, hey problem, nothing to do with me, it’s everyone else…..just like all the other issues.

  • The Rangers idea does not work. I have 4 local issues that I have to ask to be done annually, they all need doing every 3 months. Last year it took 3 months from time of request for 2 jobs to be done badly. By now I should not have to ask. the jobs should be on an annual list with dates ready.

  • I wish The Mighty Oz that that would be true but in the 21st century a car is a necessity, but we dont expect to crawl a 5 mph up Crown Hill all day every day

  • Richard,
With the increasing population you will be crawling at 5mph everywhere soon. You and I are just as much the problem as everyone else. Too many cars on the road, all belonging to other people. When are readers of this site ever going to get it.
