It’s a very difficult year for the people in charge of grass cutting at the District Council. First off, their previous contractor went bankrupt. And since then we’ve had these absurd amounts of rain making everything grow so quickly. So we do appreciate they are making an effort.
As we’ve mentioned before, you can report overgrown verges online – just click here – we’ve also put this link in our right sidebar.
However one resident contacted the council about this stretch of overgrown grass between Sweyne Park and Downhall Park Way in Rayleigh:
He was told that this was really a ditch, not a verge and so was only scheduled to be cut once a year, later on this year.
We pointed out that
a) there wasn’t much point having a council notice board if people couldn’t get close enough to read it
b) the long grass going to seed was pretty tiresome for all the keen gardeners on the other side of the road and
c) having a ditch concealed in all that grass wasn’t too safe, especially with a childrens play area nearby.
The council , to their credit, emailed back very quickly and said they would cut it in the next couple of weeks.
I was at the Cloverleaf play area in Sweyne Park yesterday – almost unusable as the grass is so high. Surely there is a plan for cutting play areas?
Chris – many thanks for working behind the scenes to resolve this one – it’s much appreciated.
We have checked with the council. The immediate area around the playspace is due for a cut today or tomorrow. The wider area around is due for a haycut around July 17th….
